In the fall of 2012 we kicked off our data demonstration phase in partnership with the Illuminator – a roving van born from Occupy Wall Street that projected our data onto a local apartment building, in the form of an open letter to the NYPD. Our data called out like “bat signal” gathering neighbors to discuss what it means to live, work, raise kids, shop, go to school, play, and pray in a community that experienced over 4,000 police stops in 2011, half of which involved physical force. The evening included a performance by BombaYo, the premiere of MJP’s “Dear NYPD,” screenings of “The Community Safety Act” (NYCLU) and “Scars of Stop & Frisk” (Julie Dressner & Edwin Martinez), and a “Know Your Rights” workshop with the Bronx Defenders.
